I am creating an archive of pictures that I take from around the state. Having been born and raised in Hawaii, it's surprising how little I know of this state. What I mean is that I am trying to write a little about the various places that I am taking pictures of and I am realizing that I actually have to "research" these locations that I've always taken for granted! There are places that I drive by almost every day and there are places that I haven't seen for many, many years and I am only now discovering an appreciation for the beauty of the island. I hope to share with you some of the things that make this state unique.

Hanauma Bay

Hanauma Bay was originally a crater. One side of the crater wall eventually eroded, leaving the crater with a C-shape allowing the ocean to enter. Waves regularly pound the east coast of Oahu, but due to C-shape of the bay, waves that enter the bay are very mild. Visitors to Hanauma Bay must watch an informational video that tells a little about the history of the bay and also reminds visitors of the delicate, living coral reefs. There are anywhere from 3000 to 5000 visitors each day. Visitors are told that they are not allowed to feed the fish or touch or harass turtles. When I was a teen, EVERYONE who went to Hanauma Bay brought frozen peas and countless fish would just swarm around you.
