back in the day

Back when I was a teenager, I remember one day going to the swap table at the local library and finding a copy of Byte Magazine. I was fascinated with the magazine and all the high tech articles and gizmos in it. I remember holding on to that one specific copy of Byte Magazine for probably years. I have been searching for a copy of that magazine recently and have still not been able to find it. I do not know the year nor month of the issue, but as I recall, it had a dark cover and a dull green circuit board on the cover. As with all Byte Magazine covers, it of course was not a plain picture of a circuit board, but perhaps a closeup of a circuit board possibly floating in space. I have not been able to recall much else about the cover. For the past several months, I have been watching eBay for copies of Byte Magazine and reviewing all of the covers and I still have not found that issue. It is possible too that my recollection of the cover is inaccurate, but I would swear that if I ever did see the cover again that I would positively recognize it.

One issue of Byte Magazine that I do remember owning in the past was the December 1981 issue, Computer Games, Volume 6, Number 12. I of course remember it merely by its cover art. Byte Magazine covers have always been unique and memorable and this one is no exception. The cover depicts a pinball machine where the playing surface is a printed circuit board and the display shows a motorcycle rider and the title, Hex Angels. Since I could not find that original Byte Magazine that I was searching for, I decided to purchase this issue.

As I flipped through the magazine, it brought back so many memories of what computers were like back in the early 80s. I think the 80s were an exciting and unique time in the computer industry. I will be going through this December 1981 issue and documenting some of the things that made the 80s special. If you were into computer in the early 80s, I'm sure this will bring back many fond memories to you too. If you were not into computers back then (or for some of my friends who weren't even born yet), I'm sure you will be amazed at what we went through.

Well, my search for that elusive issue of Byte Magazine will continue. I feel that that specific issue of Byte Magazine is what seeded my interest in computers and was a significant influence in steering me toward my career in the computer industry.
